one step

I made a huge step for myself this weekend. I love taking pictures. Having a camera in my hands is the only thing more relaxing to me than getting to be in my kitchen baking. Several of my friends have been slowly pushing me towards the idea of actually printing some of my pics and trying to sell them. The first nudge was when Heather started to plant the seed in my mind. I’ve never considered myself an artist by any means, though. That’s my brother’s gig. Up to that point, I had never considered my stuff good enough to even consider selling. The next major shove was a few weekends ago when I was trying to convince a good friend of mine here in town to sell some of her own glasswork. She said that she would sell her stuff, if I would sell some of my photos. Caught up in the effort of getting her to sell her own beautiful work, I agreed. Shoot. So, now we’ve both agreed to share a booth this fall at the Tempe Fall Arts Festival. That will give both of us enough time to 1. work up the courage to go through with this insane idea and 2. to actually put together some work to sell.
The step that I finally made was this weekend, when I put together a small set of photos and had them printed out. Two of them got framed for a friend who had been asking for prints of them for a little while now. I was going to just charge her for the cost of the frames and the prints (~$10). After haggling for about 10 minutes, we both agreed to $40. Holy cow! Someone would actually want to pay for some of my pictures?! Insanity!

The rest of the batch that I printed are going to be matted. They’re the first of the photos I’m starting to gather together. Over the next few months, I’m going to start taking the pictures around to some galleries here in town (thank goodness for living in a big town with lots of art galleries) and see what they think of them. I’m not entirely sure that I’m ready to have my very weak ego shattered with people rejecting my photos, but at the same time, if I don’t try then I’ll never know if I could have been successful at this or not.

In the meantime, start to keep an eye out for me posting a few pics here and there on the site over the coming weeks as I start to filter through and find some of my favorite photos.

*crosses fingers* I can’t believe I’m this insane.
