TiVo has explained a bit about what’s going on.

Give me the UI and the box that works right out of the package, I say. TiVo is the Mac of DVRs.

I can see how this’ll annoy a lot of people. It doesn’t bother me too much since I mainly use the fast-forward to compress how long I’m watching, not specifically because I don’t want to see ads.

Then again, if TiVo makes it too annoying to use and MythTV setups get easier to use and maintain, I’d end up switching. I’m not exactly sure where that tipping point would be.

I built a PVR box utilizing a mini-itx motherboard, a hauppage 250 card, and a $60 program called BeyondTV (for windows). Going the mini-itx route has been a headache for me, but I like tinkering. The SnapSteam BeyondTV program is excellent though, and I’m glad I made the purchase.

we have been looking at much the same thing, after i get a chance to finally upgrade my desktop, that is going to be the next step.

We have been looking at mythTV as a reccomendation from one of our friends who runs it, linux based app, and more fun features than the TiVo. Plus I like the free thing….
