Hanging with the Hungarians

Ahhhh, Friday, that blessed day at the end of the week. This time I really appreciate Fridays. I have been down in Anniston Al at the Install From Hell. Yep, it has been that much fun. To this end I will say, it was not a problem with me, but a problem with the software. Evidently the software’s newest patch makes the security functionality hork. Well I did receive the fix for that this morning, so all should be well down there.

Any who, you are probably wondering about the title by now. Well NABI (my client) has a division over in Hungary, and my contact has made friends with one of the gentlemen (his name is Laszlo) who is over here for a few weeks. We all went out to lunch, and as I was leaving the office that day (at 6:00) I said hello to him and he called me over. He was working on a database that allows you to look up the English translation for Hungarian words. Very cool, he is extremely intelligent. Anyway, he is a Linux guy so we chatted about that and some other stuff. Then he invited me to go over to the hotel he was staying at with the other Hungarians. Evidently they all gather there because the hotel puts a tap in the keg of beer in the lobby, and it is free for all guests from 5-7. They also put out chips and other snacks

carpet smells

They put new carpet in the entry way to the women’s bathroom. So, now when you walk into the bathroom, all you can smell is that “new carpet smell” smell. It’s really hard to describe. What it makes me think of, though, is trade shows. Especially the day before the trade show when all of the booths are being set up and there is this overpowering smell of new carpet being laid down. I know it sound kind of odd, but now when I go into the bathroom I keep thinking I’m at a trade show rather than at work. Odd.
