common sense

Does it not make sense that the city should not have street cleaners out 15 minutes before 8am? I was driving to work this morning and wound up getting stuck behind a street cleaner because no one would let me over. Let’s think about this. I can think of two good reasons to not have the street cleaners out there during any time when the streets would be particularly busy (especially in the Research Park area).

One, it’s an annoyance for drivers who are trying to get to work on time to get stuck behind a street cleaner. It’s a certain way to start your day off badly. So, you wind up getting a line of cars that got stuck behind a street cleaner because everyone else certainly doesn’t want to slow down on their way to work.

Two, this produces a potential disaster area. First off, if someone is not paying attention going over a hill (which there are a lot of in Huntsville and this is the case I was almost in this morning) and going rather slowly, the street cleaner on the other side is essentially a blockade to run into. Thankfully, I was paying enough attention and had quick enough reflexes to stop in time. Second off, once a car gets stuck behind the street cleaner, the driver wants nothing more than to get out from behind the street cleaner. This makes the driver rather wreckless when jumping out into moving traffic in order to continue moving at a decent pace. I witnessed several near accidents if the drivers had been any less aware of their surroundings. This is particularly bad when the actual moving lane of traffic sure as hell doesn’t want to slow down any in order to let someone over.

Now, I’m not just hear to complain (although, I’ll admit that that was the main motive for this post). I’m also hear to suggest an idea that obviously works at least reasonably well in other cities… Have the street cleaners run either late at night after stores have closed or early in the morning before people start to go to work. That way, there are less cars on the road and the cars that are on the road can more easily avoid the street cleaners. This solution makes sense to me. Why doesn’t the city think of these solutions?!

peach fuzz

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, a sighting has occurred. I finally got to see what Geof’s head looks like now that he’s shaved it. Now, granted, he had been letting it grown out for the past 8 days, so it was like a layer of peach fuzz around his head. If you know Mike (Puddin’), it’s just like his head. I think that for hockey season they should both shave their heads to the same peach fuzz and be twins.

Pictures will still be forthcoming as the camera was out of batteries last night when Geof came over to pick it up.
