Blue Pepsi

Shark Tank: Not much power, but plenty of storage
This IT-pilot-fish-to-be is working his way through school as a resident assistant in a dormitory set on a dry campus — no alcohol allowed anywhere.
Student rooms each come with an aging, low-end PC with floppy drives and a network connection, but no hard disk. “They were classic beige boxes with plenty of open space inside and plenty of problems,” says fish.
And after constant complaints from his residents, fish takes on the added role of help desk, support guy and general IT problem fixer.
So when a new resident moves in and can’t get his PC screen to display anything, he calls fish — and fish walks him through the usual “check the cables, push the power switch, turn on the monitor, make sure the contrast isn’t turned down” checklist.
But nothing fixes it — the system just beeps. So fish heads down to the room to take a look for himself.
“I go to take the screws out of the case, but they’re already gone,” fish says. “I drop the system flat — it was up on end — and hear what sounds like liquid inside. I shake the system a bit, and there’s definitely sloshing around.”
So fish pops the cover. “Inside, wrapped in T-shirts, are a bottle of Absolut, a bottle of Jack Daniels and a bottle of tequila,” he says.
“The previous resident had removed everything but the motherboard to make room for the bottles.”

Yesterday, I went to the doctor. I had been last month for my yearly checkup and she had noticed that my blood pressure was high. We talked about possible causes of it and we decided that it was most likely because of all the stress I was under. It was right around Spring Break and my teachers had managed to cram a lot of stuff in to get done. So, we agreed that I would come back when the term was over and I was perhaps a bit more relaxed. So, there I was again yesterday, sitting in the cold doctor’s office, chatting about the rest of my semester with my doc. The cuff went around my arm and she took my blood pressure again. Still not good. It had gone down a little, but not enough. Then came the question as to what might be causing it. We looked back on my charts and noticed that when I had been at a lighter weight, I had had better blood pressure. That led to what means could I go about using to lose weight. Losing weight for me is not easy. It usually entails eating better and with my extremely hectic lifestyle, eating right is really hard.
Here’s the plan. I’ve got the next 3 months to lose the weight that I need to and to reduce my blood pressure. Each month, I’ll check in with her to see how I’m doing. In the meantime, every evening, I’m going to go walking. I’m going to start parking my car at the engineering building even though I have a class at Roberts Hall or Tech Hall. It means I’ll have to walk more and depend on my car less. Tomorrow, I have an appointment at a Weight Watchers center to talk about a diet plan for me. This past year, I haven’t been happy with my weight. I’ve known that I’ve been gaining weight, but it’s been hard to stick to a specific regime. Now, I have a good reason. It’s for my own health. I’ll most likely post here every once in a while about my progress. It’s more for myself that I’ll post. It’ll keep me honest. But, if others find it encouraging, then all the better. Here’s to the start of a new life.
