Iron Five

1. What was the first thing you ever cooked? Soft boiled eggs. I used to love eating them mushed up in a mug with pieces of bacon and toast. I can’t understand why I liked it anymore, but I used to love them.
2. What’s your signature dish? I don’t think I have a signature dish. It used to be lasagna. I love making breads, though. I’m getting really good at it, too. I’ve found ways of making good bread in mediocre to bad ovens.
3. Ever had a cooking disaster? (tasted like crap, didn’t work, etc.) Describe. Gravy. It was a horrible mess. My mom had gone out of town and my dad expected the usual Sunday dinner which included, among other things, gravy. I’d never made it before, but had watched my mom do it many times. I thought that I had it figured out. My one mistake was that I didn’t know that after a certain amount of thickening agent (for me, flour and water), you’re supposed to just add water and keep stirring. It will thicken up as it cooks. The end result was a ball of gravy, literally. It was so thick, I could roll it into a ball, and right into the trashcan. We didn’t have gravy that night and to this day, I still hesitate when making gravy for anything.
4. If skill and money were no object, what would make for your dream meal? I had this herb-crusted salmon filet once with some really creamy piped potatoes and fresh, crunchy green beans. I’ve never been able to replicate that salmon since. That would be my dream meal.
5. What are you doing this weekend? Homework. Relaxing for a little bit. Oh, and tons of sleep. My body is demanding sleep to be a high priority on my weekend schedule. I think I might go shopping around for some stuff for the apartment and my office, too.
