Goin’ North

Well to all of those who do not know Kat and I will be heading up to the northwest at the end of this month. She and I were invited to Anderson Island, home of family reunions on my mother’s side. Anderson Island is a small piece of land that has the distinction of being the most southern of the Puget Sound Islands, near Seattle.

My mother’s sister and her husband own a large house on the island, which naturally lends itself to family gatherings. My folks and I have the longest distance to travel over here on the east coast, although my grandparents coming from Hawaii is about the same. To give you some background, my mother has two brothers and two sisters. Match that up with my grandparents and it looks like you have a cloned family. It is seriously scary how you can tell my mom’s side of the family when you meet them. She and her sisters could almost trade places. And her brothers, well you can see that they are just the same. Now all of the various brothers and sisters are married, and have kids, this makes for quite a large group of people. I lost track of the numbers years and years ago. I am really appreciative of Kat coming along on this trip, after my sister the next oldest cousin is 16. So it shall be very nice to have someone in the same age group around, and the fact that it is my girlfriend is a bonus. Overall it will be a fun time to hang out, enjoy the scenery, count deer, go crabbing, and catch up with the family. And the location could not be better.

(Insert a more cognitive transition here)

There is just something that I really enjoy about being in the northwest. It is where I am from (Portland, which has no ports) but I did not live there long enough to remember much of it, just enough for the memory to hang in my heart. It really is the place that I want to eventually live, and these family reunions are just a taste that wets my palate.
