My Jaw Won’t Open. But, Who Needs A Jaw?
Posted in General on 08/09/2001 08:39 am by katYesterday wasn’t too bad. I stayed drugged for the majority of the day and had my blood sugar crash a bit since I couldn’t eat any substantial meals throughout the day. I can survive that, though. I know how to treat blood sugar crashes. The wisdom teeth are out now, though. It’s over, I don’t get them back.
Dr. Kamelchuk, the oral surgeon who did the procedure, was the nicest guy. They stuck the IV in me and he came in and talked to me about the procedure as he injected the IV with the wonderful anasthesia that knocked me out. I just fell into a peaceful sleep for most of it. Towards the end, I got some of my conciousness back, but two things were working for me. He had gone ahead and applied a local anasthetic to my mouth so that I couldn’t feel a damn thing (granted, it left my lower mouth numb for the rest of the day, but that’s another story). The other was that I wasn’t really conscious. It was like I recognized that they were still doing the procedure and I could hear them a little bit, but couldn’t make out the words. I just couldn’t really feel anything, so it was weird. Almost as if I was floating just a few inches above me body, partly attached, but not completely.
The next thing I knew the procedure was over and the doctor and a nurse helped me walk to one of the recovery rooms. These rooms were nice. They had a really comfy overstuffed leather chair in them that they let me rest in and another one for when they finally let my mom back there. I, sadly, had a few bad reactions to the anasthesia, but after throwing up what little was in my stomach, I was pretty okay. When I finally regained actual thinking consciousness and the doctor had talked to me about some of the after-effects, they let me go home. Dr. Kamelchuk walked me out to a back door where mom had pulled the van up to me and helped into it. Mom then took me back to Sean’s with a quick stopover to pick up some antiobiotics and painkillers.
The rest of the day I spent alternatively watching TV and napping. Oh and drinking lots of milkshakes and eating juice bars. I did finally get some chicken broth and rice down me, but it was more of me just swallowing me rice whole. At least it was solid, that’s all I can say.
I am now a recoveree doing pretty well. I don’t think I’ll be doing any activities tonight, but at least I’m on the road to healing at a quick pace.
Hopefully, within the next day or so, I’ll finally get around to doing a post about my New Orleans experience. It’s a city that has changed a lot since I last saw it, but also remained very much the same.
